Deinosuchus is a large alligatoroid crocodilian from the Campanian stage of the Late Cretaceous epoch.

In The Isle, the Deinosuchus is an Apex Predator and a constant underwater threat, inflicting unseen fear to all those who come near the waterways to drink. When snatched by a Deinosuchus, it's often too late to escape.

The Deinosuchus was added to The Isle in EVRIMA Patch 0.7.85.04, along with the Pteranodon.

In Real Life[]

Deinosuchus was a apex crocodilian that inhabited Cretaceous North America. Far larger than any extant crocodilian species today, the largest species could reach a length of 41 feet or higher estimates placing at 46 feet with a mass of 13-15 tonnes, while smaller species reached a length of 30-35 ft. and a mass of 3.7-6.8 tones. With a bite force of approximately 102,803 N (10,483 kgf; 23,111 lb.) estimated for a 3,450 kg specimen,[1] it could crush its prey down to the bone - and then the bone itself.

Some hadrosaurs and ornithopod fossils show bite marks left from a Deinosuchus, suggesting that this massive crocodilian hunted in a similar fashion to today's crocodiles. The Deinosuchus died out before the Cretaceous-Paleogene Extinction Event.

In The Isle[]

"You'll have reason to fear the depths with the addition aquatic predators prowling the waterways. Be sure to take the utmost care... Else you may find yourself snatched up in the jaws of the terrifying Deinosuchus!"

-The Isle Official Roadmap

DeinosuchusSurface

The Deinosuchus is extremely undetectable while submerged.

Completely unseen even when only a few feet underwater, the Deinosuchus has the ability to detect all nearby surface water movement through a special watersense. Once prey is detected, the Deinosuchus bursts from the water to lunge at its victims within the blink of an eye. It grabs them within its jaws, just before forcing them below the surface to slowly drown them. Even juvenile Deinosuchus are greatly capable of grabbing and drowning smaller adult creatures, such as Dryosaurus.

Deinosuchus is freshwater only, they do not gain water by being in the ocean. The North ocean is particularly a death trap for any Deinosuchus as it is a one-way drop from the river into the ocean area, with no way to climb back up to the river.

The Deinosuchus' preferred diet consists of Pteranodon, Pachycephalosaurus and Tenontosaurus for carbohydrates, Carnotaurus, Stegosaurus and Omniraptor for proteins and Dryosaurus, Elite Fish and other Deinosuchus for lipids, making Deinosuchus a cannibal. Pachycephalosaurus, Dryosaurus, Carnotaurus & Utahraptor are proficient in the plains and arid regions, along with Stegosaurus, which also live in jungles. Tenontosaurus thrives close to water biomes, such as rivers & swamps, but also doesn't mind the plains. Elite fish and other Deinosuchus primarily exist in the rivers that populate Isla Spiro, but they also inhabit the swamps. Additionally, a swimming Deinosuchus will never become thirsty.

Holding down Q while submerged boosts the range you can sense movement with in water (see full list of water controls below), as well as producing fake ripples similar to that of the fish that Pteranodon prey on, and can be used to lure in players in search of a quick meal in the water.

Deinosuchus is unable to vomit and therefore immune to the bacterial bite of Ceratosaurus.

You can view a full list of the Deinosuchus' swimming controls here

It should also be noted that the isle deinosuchus is not based on the current research of Deinosuchus Hatcheri and its not paleo accurate to the species, as in-game the Deinosuchus is 39 feet long where the current estimates have it placed at 13.56-14.12 meters long (44.4-46 feet long) and would have weighed around 13.5-15.1 Tons this is based on the specimens TMM-43632-1 and CM-963.

Mechanics[]

Controls[]

Standard movement controls - WASD to walk, Z to slow walk, Shift to run. Spacebar in the water to float upwards, Ctrl to swim downwards.

Q on land or above the water to sniff the air. Use Q underneath the surface to have an enhanced radius to detect movement in the water. The Deinosuchus can only detect movement at the surface of the water.

LMB to do a standard bite attack.

While underwater, tap RMB to rapidly launch yourself to your fastest swimming speed with a stamina cost.

While waterwalking (walking along the waterbed), press and hold RMB to lunge at your prey and drag it underwater to drown it. It is very important that you hold RMB during the entire process, otherwise you will let go of the prey. A Deinosuchus can only grab creatures which are less than half of their own weight.. When you lunge a creature heavier than half your weight, you will get stunned. It is therefore not advisable.

Hold RMB on land to do a smaller lunge which consumes more stamina. You cannot run on land while the prey is grabbed.

General Information[]

Pros:

  • Excellent ambush predator in water
  • Highest health of any creature
  • Highest bite force
  • Thirst does not drain when in water
  • Has the ability to lunge
  • High bleed resistance
  • Fast and strong alternate attack
  • Able to eat rotten flesh without negative affects

Cons:

  • Very vulnerable on land
  • Unable to wallow
  • Extremely susceptible to fall damage (this includes falling into water if the water is too shallow)
  • Very fast thirst drain on land
  • Slowest creature in the game on land
  • Alternate attacks consume stamina on land
  • O2 resaturation takes time
  • High risk of predation by other Deinosuchus, as this features in its diet

Behind the Scenes[]

The Deinosuchus had been in development for many years, going through a number of entirely different models and animations. Its unique swimming mechanic is what caused its development to last for so long.

With its release, is the first ever semi-aquatic creature added to the game, designed to inhabit the swamps and rivers of both Isla Spiro and Isla Spero.

Roadmap:[]

Deinosuchus was added as a playable creature in "Update #3".

The creature is featured in the new "New Heights, New Depths" Update #3 Trailer.
